This post is all about essential tips you NEED to know when designing a Japandi style interior.

Combining the sleek simplicity of traditional Japanese decor with the soft minimalism of a Scandinavian interior, Japandi style is one of the hottest interior design styles right now.

I think this design style is absolutely beautiful and I’m super excited to share my top tips to help you successfully pull off this look in your own space.

I’ll be covering tips when it comes to colors, layout, textures, shapes, and more.

I’ll also be sharing some gorgeous Japandi decor pieces that are sure to level up your decor.

Here are my top three tips to design using the Japandi home decor trend.

Japandi Style: 3 Must Know Techniques

#1: Choose Decor Made Of Natural Materials

When you look at examples of Japandi style decor, you’ll notice lots of decor that uses natural materials like wood and stone.

Both Japanese and Scandinavian design styles use elements of nature whether it’s through the materials used, in their walls and flooring, furniture, using nature-inspired imagery in artwork, or through incorporating greenery into a space.

When decorating your Japandi home, you can use the examples above to incorporate elements of nature into your space.

If you’re looking for some nature-inspired decor pieces to get you started, I found a few that are absolutely perfect for Japandi decor:

#2. Use Handmade Decor

My next Japandi decor tip is to use handmade decor in your space.

Handmade decor often has small “imperfections” and unique textures that make them feel very organic and natural, tying back to my first tip of incorporating nature into your space.

Factory-made decor often lacks this organic, imperfect feel which can sometimes make your decor look flat and boring.

Handmade decor is a fantastic way to add some dimension and visual intrigue to your space, and these imperfect details will look incredible when natural light hits them.

If you’re famailiar with Wabi Sabi design, Japandi also embraces the beauty of imperfections and an unfinished aesthetic.

Plus, you’ll be supporting artists and small businesses, which is always a major plus!

3. Decorate With Warm, Natural Hues

The third Japandi style decor tip I want to share is to use a warm, neutral color palette. Think tan, brown, off-white, cream, maroon, green, etc.

Warm hues will make your space feel homey and inviting, and they’re a staple when it comes to traditional Japanese decor.

I suggest using light neutral colors as your main decor colors and using them in “large” pieces like furniture, walls, and flooring.

Dark, natural hues like brown and dark green make beautiful accent colors. You can use these dark muted colors in small decor pieces like vases, wall hangings, sculptures, and pillows.

Some examples of small, dark decor pieces that make perfect accents in Japandi interior design are ones like these:

Outro & Closing Thoughts

So, that wraps up my top three tips when it comes to decorating in a Japandi style.

This interior design style beautifully integrates elements of Japanese and Scandinavian design, making it an optimal choice for those wanting an interior focused on simplicity and clean lines.

I hope this post gives you some great advice and inspiration when it comes to Japandi decor!
