As someone who currently lives in a cute little studio in Upstate New York, I’m super excited to be sharing my top decor tips when it comes to studio apartment decor and funrishing.
Just because you live in a small space doesn’t mean it has to feel small, and there are plenty of ways to make your apartment feel more open, airy, and spacious than it really is.
I’ve lived in my studio for a couple of months and can finally say that I’m done decorating it!
With that said, I’ve learned some fantastic, essential tips that help make my space look bigger.
I’ll be covering tips related to lighting, decor, color palettes, and layout. If you’re looking for decor inspiration and tips when it comes to studio apartments and other small spaces, keep reading!
Here are 4 must know tips on how to make a studio apartment feel bigger.
#1: Use Light & Bright Colors
The first essential small space decor tip I have for you is to use primarily light colors in your apartment.
White is the most obvious example of this, but other light colors that work beautifully are tan, off-white, sage green, or even pastels.
Light colors are excellent at making a space feel open, airy, and giving the illusion of extra space.
Dark decor tends to do the opposite - making a space feel smaller and closed in.
I personally love using different shades of white decor as the base colors in my own apartment and simply love how it looks.
I love classic white decor, but I’ve found that it’s easier to keep off-white decor looking clean.
I think the best way to go about this tip is to have a light shade be your primary decor color, but use other colors as accents to give your space some dimension.
If your apartment has dark flooring, it can actually act as a really nice contrast to white furniture.
But if you’re looking to lessen the visual impact of the dark flooring in your studio apartment, a large white rug is the best way to go!
Even if you already have light flooring, a large light-colored rug is a great way to add some texture and dimension to your apartment.

#2: Use Large Mirrors
My second essential tip when it comes to making your studio apartment feel bigger is to utilize mirrors!
Mirrors give the illusion of making it look like there’s more to your apartment than there really is.
They’re a fantastic way to open up any small space in an elegant way.
I’m obsessed with wavy, asymmetrical mirrors like the one above, but I think any large or full length mirror does the trick!

#3: Use Tall Decor Pieces
The next small space decor tip I have for you is to utilize tall and narrow decor pieces.
I found a great example of this in the image above, which features a gorgeous spiral macrame wall hanging.
Tall or long decor gives the illusion of higher ceilings, which in turn makes a small space feel much more open.
Besides things like wall hangings and wall art, other great ways to incorporate tall decor into your space include using lots of greenery like tall plants and even hanging plants.
I love styling plants by hanging them from the ceiling in a corner of the room.
I find that placing decor pieces as high as possible draws your eye upwards and continues giving the illusion of a higher ceiling and spacious interior.
Here’s another beautiful tall decor piece to help you achieve this look in your own studio apartment or small space:
#4: Keep Your Surfaces Clear
The final studio apartment decor tip I have for you is probably the most important one I’ll cover!
I cannot underestimate the importance of keeping your surfaces nice and clear in a small space.
Even if your space utilizes light colors, tall decor, mirrors, and other small space decor tips, a cluttered interior can negate all of those.
I know firsthand that keeping your studio apartment clean and decluttered is especially challenging, especially when you don’t have a lot of storage for your belongings in the first place.
I recommend making use of the storage you have the best you can by using handy organization tools like these in your pantry and cabinets:
