Pegboards for your desk have become my most recent obsession! So of course, I just had to get one of my own.
In this post, I’m sharing all the details on how I put my pegboard together - including where I found mine, everything I used to decorate it, how I put it together and hung it up, and more.
I’ll also be sharing some of my thoughts and reflections when it comes to all things pegboards.
That means reviewing everything I bought and sharing my top decorating and building tips to help you create your dream pegboard!
Anyways, I absolutely love how mine turned out and I’m super excited to share it with you, so let’s get into it.
Everything I Bought
First, let’s start off with a little haul! Here are the links to everything I got for this project in case you’re interested (I’ll go into more detail on my thoughts about all of these products later in the article):
Can you tell I went for a white and neutral theme for my pegboard (lol)? Here’s a little video of me unboxing everything (almost as much fun as decorating):
Now that we’ve got all of our supplies, let’s start building our dream pegboard.
I know everyone always raves about the Iconic IKEA pegboard, and I can’t really speak on it having never owned it myself, but that’s actually not what I used for this project.
I live in a college apartment, and to be honest I’m not sure what my apartment’s rules are when it comes to drilling holes in the wall, but I’d always rather be safe than sorry and not break any potential rules.
Mainly though, I’m just lazy and wanted to find a pegboard set that didn’t require any drilling, lol! So, I found this one on Amazon.
Here’s what it looks like after hanging up each of the boards! Let me talk a little bit about how well these stay up considering they don’t require any drilling.
These boards have sticky adhesive strips on the back that help them stay up, which you can see here:
The first panel I put up kept falling down, so I did have to use some of this double sided wall tape to provide extra support, which did the trick.
I had an easier time putting up the other three panels because they were always being supported by another panel, especially the top two (they were able to pretty much just sit right on top of the bottom two panels with minimal extra tape needed).
Now that our panels are set up, it’s time for the most fun part: decorating!
Decorating + Finished Results!
Above is what my pegboard looks like fully complete with all the decor! Below is what it looks with my whole desk setup:
I’m absolutely in love with how this turned out. It’s cozy, simple, minimal, and exactly my style!
Let’s get into some details about how I decorated plus some tips when it comes to decorating your own pegboard.
The biggest thing I focused on in order to make my pegboard aesthetic was creating “visual balance” with my layout.
Basically, that means not having any elements of your design stick out in a way that it’s not meant to.
Think of your pegboard as a canvas, your decor elements as paint, and your who setup as a work of art!
Alright, metaphors are great, but what are some actual, concrete ways you can create visual balance? Here are my top tips.

#1: Have A Cohesive Color Scheme
If picking a color scheme is overwhelming to you, my biggest piece of advice is to stick to 2-3 colors at the most to help simplify things when decorating.
A hack for finding gorgeous color palettes to use when decorating is to literally just search up what type of color scheme you’re looking for on Pinterest or Google.
For example, you can search up palettes that are minimalist, girly, pink, soft, pastel, rainbow, etc. You can also use coolors.co to automatically generate gorgeous color schemes for you.
#2: Place The Biggest Pieces First
A super easy way to approach the decorating process is to place the biggest elements of the design down first, and then fill in the remaining spaces with smaller pieces.
For my pegboard, I hung the shelves first since they took up the most space. Then, I used the remaining space to help determine where to put my pencil cup and hook.
#3: Space Out Pieces of Similar Sizes
Now that you’ve got your big pieces placed, it’s time to fill in the gaps with your clips, pencil cups, book holders, smaller shelves, hooks, or whatever else you want to add to your pegboard.
The way I’d recommend going about doing this to make your pegboard look aesthetic is to make sure similarly sized elements aren’t too close to each other.
For example, you can see that in my pegboard, I placed my shelves on opposite sides of the board to give my layout some breathing room.
Same thing with my smaller pieces - my hook and pencil cup - they’re placed opposite each other.
Using this design technique will help create a visually dynamic layout that flows nicely and feels natural!
#4: Don’t Place Pieces With Similar Heights Right Next To Each Other
This next tip takes the same concept in the last tip but applies it to the decor on your shelves.
For example, you can see that on my pegboard shelves, one decor piece is always noticeably taller than the other.
Again, this helps to create a dynamic layout that doesn’t feel stagnant. It’s interesting to look at, visually cohesive, and flows well!
